Small counterstamps known as “chopmarks” are frequently found on U.S. Trade Dollars, as well as other large silver coins issued in the 19th and early 20th century. These marks, usually consisting of a single Chinese character or other symbol, were punched into the coin by Chinese merchants to signal that the coin had been assayed and contained its stated silver content.

This 1873 CC Trade Dollar was recently submitted sporting an extreme quantity of chopmarks. Most often, coins are encountered with only a couple chopmarks. This coin was determined to be genuine and was encapsulated with a details grade.
