Conservation Coin of the Month
Poor storage can do ugly things to beautiful coins. As numismatists, we are familiar with the results of long-term storage in short-term PVC-laden coin holders. Extremes in other storage conditions can cause other problems as well.
This 1911 S $5 was recently submitted for NCS conservation with no question as to why. The even, orange, rust-like residue was completely hiding the coin’s surfaces, leaving a huge question as to what the coin would look like underneath. With careful conservation, the thick residue was removed and revealed the original coin underneath. The coin was eligible for NGC grading, following the conservation.
