Conservation Coin of the Month
Unattractive toning and residues can make a coin most dreadful. So dreadful, that one numismatist submitted this 1929-D Half Dollar to NCS for removal of the residues and spotty toning. Thick residues are not only detrimental to the eye appeal of a coin, but can be damaging to the surface in long-term storage. Coins with heavy residues are good candidates for conservation.
The conservators were able to safely remove the residues. The unattractive and spotty toning presented a challenge but was able to be safely removed, leaving a bright, attractive coin. This coin was able to grade with NGC following the conservation.
