In the coinage shortage of the mid-1960s, the popular proof coin set was replaced by the Special Mint Set. The coins in a Special Mint Set were specially treated and struck from regular circulation coins but were not quite proof coins.

This example of the 1965 Special Mint Set Dime developed an unattractive brown haze and tone after years of exposure to common environmental hazards. Prior to certification with NGC, the submitter wanted the brown removed so that the coin would not only grade to its best potential, but be attractive and stable in the long-term. The NCS technicians were able to remove the brown from the surface of this coin, allowing it to grade very well with NGC.
