Key date coins are the pride of many numismatists’ collections. When a key date coin is plagued with unattractive toning and distracting spots it can both diminish the pride as well as prove damaging to the coin in the long run.

This 1885 Liberty Five Cent coin was submitted to NCS recently to address the general unattractive red-brown tone and the beginnings of green corrosion spots especially on the reverse. The 1885 coin proves to be the key date for most collectors of the series, as the true key date in the series only has a small handful of examples even known to exist. Skillful removal of the brown tone and reduction of the spots made this coin once again the pride of a collection and graded numerically with NGC.
