As a general rule, original mint packaging is not the best for long-term storage. Quite often original mint packaging is not airtight and sometimes contains questionable materials. Long-term storage in mint packaging often results in a haze that will prevent the coin from grading to the fullest potential.

A collector recently submitted this 1990 China Silver 5 Yuan to have a haze removed from the surface that was obscuring the mirrored fields. Some of the haze even took on the appearance of a fingerprint in places. Once the haze had been removed, the surfaces revealed themselves mirrored and bright and free from any damage. The coin was able to grade with NGC following the conservation. For a reduced fee, any modern coin dated 1970 or later and valued under $3,000 can be both conserved and graded using the NCS modern special.
